Significance of Perfume in Islam

Significance of Perfume in Islam

The Prophet Muhammed  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )

Fragrance is one of the things that can enhance the beauty, elegance, and attractiveness of a person. It can also create a pleasant atmosphere, a good impression, and a positive mood. But did you know that fragrance is also a from the sunnah (prophetic tradition), and a source of reward in Islam?

The Benefits of Using Perfume in Islam

Using perfume in Islam has many benefits both in this world and the hereafter. Some of these benefits are:

  • It is a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ), who loved perfume and used it frequently. He said: “Endeared to me of your worldly life [are] women and perfume.” He also said: “The best of your perfume is musk.”

Another hadith quotes that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) used to apply fragrance before he went to pray at the mosque, especially before the Friday prayer. He also advised his companions to do the same:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, “Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil (on his hair) or scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way between two persons (assembled in the mosque for the Friday prayer), and prays as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven.”
